Our Commitment to Quality
NZS 8171:2005 Allied Health Services Sector Standard
At Foot Mechanics, we believe great foot care is not just about what happens in the treatment room. It is also about the systems behind the service: how we protect your privacy, manage clinical records, maintain safe clinics, monitor quality, respond to feedback, and make sure every customer receives care that is professional, consistent, and respectful.
That is why Foot Mechanics has chosen to work to the NZS 8171:2005 Allied Health Services Sector Standard, the New Zealand standard developed for allied health services such as podiatry, physiotherapy, chiropractic and other health providers.
What is NZS 8171:2005?
NZS 8171:2005 is a quality and safety framework for allied health providers in New Zealand. It sets expectations for how health services should be organised, delivered, monitored and improved. The standard covers the full service experience, including:
• consumer rights, privacy, dignity and informed consent;
• culturally appropriate care, including responsiveness to Māori values and beliefs;
• governance, management, staff capability, quality systems and risk management;
• assessment, treatment planning, service delivery and review of outcomes;
• clinical records, information management, infection control and equipment safety; and
• safe, clean and appropriate clinic environments.
In simple terms, the standard helps ensure that care is not left to chance. It requires an allied health provider to have the right systems, checks and responsibilities in place so customers can have confidence in the service they receive.
Why this matters to us
Foot Mechanics operates across a national network, which means consistency matters. A customer in one location should be able to expect the same level of professionalism, safety and service quality as a customer in another. That does not happen through good intentions alone. It requires clear standards, documented systems, training, review and accountability.
Working to NZS 8171:2005 helps us strengthen the parts of healthcare that customers may not always see, but absolutely rely on. These include how we protect your information, how we manage infection control, how we respond to concerns, how we maintain clinical records, and how we keep improving the way our services are delivered.
What this means for our customers
For our customers, this commitment means Foot Mechanics is focused on more than providing treatment. We are committed to providing care that is safe, consistent, well-managed and centred on the person receiving the service.
It means we take responsibility for the quality of our systems as well as the quality of our clinical care. It means we regularly look at how we can improve. It means we expect our people and our provider network to work within a clear framework for professional, ethical and customer-focused service.
Going beyond minimum expectations
NZS 8171:2005 provides a comprehensive framework for allied health service quality. PodiatryNZ has also used the standard as the foundation for quality resources designed to help podiatrists build stronger clinical and business systems.
For Foot Mechanics, working to this level is important because our customers deserve confidence, not guesswork. They deserve to know that the organisation providing their care has invested in the systems, processes and standards needed to deliver reliable service across New Zealand.
Standards do not replace clinical judgement, compassion or experience. But they do help make sure those things are supported by strong systems. That is why this standard matters to us, and why we continue to use it as part of our commitment to great service.
