Ankle Pain

Ankle pain is a common complaint that can result from various causes, including injuries, overuse, medical conditions, and biomechanical issues. The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe and debilitating, and it may be accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling, bruising, instability, or limited range of motion. You’re not alone and our Podiatrists can help.

Ankle sprains are among the most common causes of ankle pain. They occur when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn, usually due to twisting the ankle. Common types include lateral (outside) and high ankle sprains. Other causes of ankle pain can include:

  • Injuries such as fractures and tendon injuries which can cause severe pain, swelling and bruising.
  • Inflammation of the tendons in the ankle can cause pain and discomfort. Achilles tendonitis is a common example.
  • Weakness in the muscles
  • Poor proprioception
  • Certain types of activity
  • Choice of footwear (e.g. high heel shoes)
  • Feet structure (e.g. hypermobile ankle and extreme varus foot type)
  • Medical conditions (e.g. gout, Rheumatoid Arthrisits)

If you are experiencing ankle pain and it is causing you concern, you may need to book an appointment for a Lower Limb Musculoskeletal Assessment. It is important to consult a Podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can help prevent further damage and faciliatate a faster recovery. A Lower Limb Musculoskeletal Assessment is a series of clinical tests to determine the underlying cause of the pain and discomfort you are experiencing. At the end of the assessment, our Podiatrist will give you a treatment plan which may include orthotics, supported by exercises and shoe recommendations.
