Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is a very common complaint. Over 400,000 people in New Zealand and 700 million people worldwide suffer from it. It affects men more than women and is more common as you get older.

Most fungal nail infections cause merely cosmetic complaints with most sufferers reporting unsightly and embarrassing changes. The nail becomes thickened, discoloured and often crumbly, it becomes impossible to cut down and takes on a unique odour.

If left untreated, fungal nail infection can be very painful in shoes and can cause corns down the outside of the nail. In some cases, the nail can lift from the end of the toe and debris can collect under it, altering the curvature of the nail.

Why do Doctors not always prescribe oral antifungal medications for certain people?

Oral anti-fungal medication is typically taken over a period of several months. They are only prescribed if a doctor or dermatologist is satisfied there is no risk of the drugs causing interactions with any other medications you might be taking.

In addition your doctor will ensure there is no existing impairment of your liver or kidneys, or history of certain heart problems such as abnormal heart rhythms or congestive heart failure. Doctors need to be satisfied on these matters because anti-fungal oral medications can cause serious interactions with other drugs and can lead in rare cases to serious liver and heart complications.

How long does the treatment take?

The laser treatment usually takes 40 minutes to complete.

How much is the consultation?

We do not charge for the initial consultation element of the treatment in order to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the PinPointe FootLaser.

How much does treatment cost?

The initial consultation for laser treatment is FREE. This is a good chance to talk with the Podiatrist and see if laser treatment is right for you. The cost of laser treatment is usually $495 per treatment and we strongly recommend 3 treatments over the course of 12 months for optimal results. We are running a summer special from November 2019 – February 2020 at $999 for 3 treatments. There are 3 additional take home products that we recommend you use to help aid the laser treatment – these 3 products can be purchased together for $140.

How can I pay?

We accept major credit and debit cards with the exception of American Express. We also accept cash, OXIPAY, Q Card and Farmers Card.

Can I have just one nail treated?

Our policy is to treat all ten nails to ensure that any trace of the infection has been eradicated. The infection can spread easily to other toenails as they are tightly packed in socks and shoes.

How effective is the treatment?

In the first studies the treatment was found to be 80% effective from one treatment. Since the first clinical studies, thousands of treatments have been carried out and we believe the effectiveness has risen.

Is there any pain involved?

Most patients do not feel a thing. Where any patients have felt discomfort, it is simply a warm feeling that passes quickly or in rare few cases a slight pinprick is felt.

Will I be tested for fungal nail infection?

There are specific signs and details that the Podiatrist will look for that will indicate a fungal nail infection. If there is any doubt in diagnosis then your nail clippings will be sent for testing, however there is a 30% risk of the results providing false negatives.

Can I claim for laser treatment on my health insurance?

This procedure is considered aesthetic and therefore health insurance does not provide coverage.

Are the practitioners qualified?

Only certified Podiatrists are able to carry out the treatment. Training and certification is awarded by Dr Michael Uro, a Podiatrist in California, USA after being trained according to the standards of PathoLase/PinPointe.

Who are PathoLase / PinPointe?
