Calf strain
Pain in the calf muscle can happen in upper, mid or lower calf.
Pain can be caused by an accident, overuse, training error, poor biomechanics (e.g. abnormal pronation), muscle imbalance or poor flexibility.
Treatment for a calf strain may include; rest, sports massage, anti-inflammatories, stretching, strengthening, orthotics, change of footwear, strapping and activity modification.
Reoccurring calf strains are a red flag for an underlying biomechanical problem. Podiatrists are specialists in assessing and treating biomechanical problems.
